This is a beautiful silk chenille rug in royal blue decorated with a large central flower with smaller ones scattered around. Chenille yarn was first made in France in the 1700's, then it was used to make shawls in Scotland and then into rugs and bedspreads.
The qualities of chenille are - it is a soft fabric, has a beautiful drape, is durable and iridescent. Even though the fibers used to make chenille are not inherently shiny, the fabric and yarn catches the light at right angles because of the direction of the pile. This effect can make the fabric appear shiny and iridescent.
All these qualities can be seen in this beautiful fabric. It can have a number of uses - as a stunning and delicate floor covering, a heavy bed or settee cover, a wall hanging, or for table decor.
The rug has been well cared for having kept it's striking colours and with only a few signs of wear - as seen in photo 7. The tassels around the rug are no longer there but the edging is with, a little fraying as seen in photo 9. The fabric has been treated with an anti-bacterial fabric refresher.
