This is a wonderful Herman Miller Eames classic parchment coloured RAR design with a beech wood rocking base that has become a home decoration icon. The fiberglass Eames chairs were released to the marketplace in 1950, initially with a production run of 3 Eames shell chair colors (Parchment, Greige & Elephant Grey Hide). The famous Eames Rocking (R) Arm (A) Chair on Rod (R) Base, abbreviated to RAR, was one of the ‘original 5’ released in 1950 and remains a firm favourite with collectors and home owners all these years later.
Original rocking bases were available in either zinc plated or black oxide frame and Birch or Walnut runners. The Eames RAR Chair was originally marketed as a rocker chair ‘good for young mothers’ but it is fair to say it is a favourite corner piece in all kinds of homes today. It was launched as one option of the original 5 base options including the DAR Eiffel, Dowel DAW, 4-leg DAX and LAR ‘cats cradle’. Although the rocking versions was discontinued in 1968 (making it a rare piece), famously from 1968 to 1984, Herman Miller did continue to give a rocking chair to all employees with new born babies!
This Eames chair has been very well cared for over the 70 plus years of it's life with just a few minor scuffs and discolouration around the edges (please see photos). Trace of label is under the seat.
